CIGARETTES
Seize my cigarette break
and turn the tassels
into rags of rough burlap
The smoke rings
wafted around your neck
like a noose
Hung out to get wet
with my tears
of hydrochloric acid
They burned your tender skin
and I knew this
but did not care
to see the round wounds
on the back of your heart
singed hair and coughing spells
Another twenty lie in the gutter
Another minute ticks by
with the silent song of reason
screaming in my ear
but I am puffing away
and squinting at you
through the smoke
While they cry laughter
while weeping for my future
maybe they will create an ocean
for me to swim into
and escape
the inevitable tomorrow
of never
